The Mayor’s Blog – Councillor Mark Jones
My year started on 17th May with the Annual Council meeting and Mayor making at the Eastern Oswestry Community Centre. This was the Council's first face to face meeting for 12 months and the first meeting since the election and therefore I pleased to welcome the new Council and proud to be the Chairman and Mayor in what will be a very important year. Whilst it was great to see so many friends and Family on Zoom on the 17th, it was only recently that I got to put on the fabled red Mayor's robe and stylish hat - I felt like I had super powers!
The first event that I officially attended was the Charity market on the Bailey Head and it was brilliant seeing the different organisations that volunteer to help our wonderful community. I can't mention everyone but just highlight a couple for you. Firstly Horatios Garden - which raises money to provide hospitals with a garden for veterans and injured soldiers to help them recuperate from surgery. This links nicely to me signing the Armed Forces Covenant last week alongside, Corporal Maggie Durrant and Paula Pugh from the Rotary Club - I urge all businesses to sign it and help our Military personnel on their journeys after they leave serving the country.
I have also visited ReMap who adapt items for people who are struggling with sight or lack of movement. It was great to see how they had thought out and solved small items to help people in their homes - for example they made someone in a wheelchair a 2 foot long key so they could unlock the door without going too close. They work closely with groups that support the visually impaired such as Oswestry Talking Newspaper whom I have as a charity to support in my year of office.
