Meet the new Mayor

Councillor Mark Jones represents the Cabin Ward Lane of Oswestry. Mark was born on the family farm in Gobowen and still enjoys farming keeping a small flock of Shropshire sheep, laying hens and pigs. He believes in eating local produce, keeping airmiles down and leaving a legacy having planted over 200 trees and installed solar power and a Biomass Boiler to reduce carbon footprint.

Mark will be supported in his Mayoral year by his wife of 32 years and their four children. Ruth will become the Mayoress and is a local nurse.

Mark works for Greenlands Insurance, is the Shropshire Unitary Councillor for Gobowen Selattyn and Weston Rhyn where he sits on the Planning Committee, is Chairman of Cornovii Housing Supervisory Board and a board member of STAR Housing - demonstrating his interest in getting better housing for local people.

He is passionate about rugby and the values it gives to children and players and was Chairman of Oswestry Rugby from 2003 -09. Although nearing 60 he still has aspirations to keep playing and keep a promise that he will play in the same team as his sons.

The Mayor will be supporting two charities, locally Oswestry Talking Newspapers who helped his mother in her later years and secondly, the My Name5 Doddie Foundation which raises money for Motor Neuron Disease (MND) research.
