Harold Whitfield

The Town Council was delighted to organise a dedication service for the unveiling of a memorial to Harold Whitfield the Oswestry born VC holder. The Government has provided a paving stone to each community to site within the birth place of their VC holder.

The dedication ceremony took place in Cae Glas Park, Oswestry.

A welcome was extended by the Mayor, Councillor Vince Hunt.
Lt Col Andrew Trelawny, Regional Secretary of the Rifles outlined the paving stone initiative and the Victoria Cross citation was led by Lt Col Ian Sawers representing HM Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire. Also in attendance were Rhoderick Swire the new High Sheriff of Shropshire.

The service was led by the Rev Edward Ward (former Military Padre) and the Rev Harvey Gibbons the Vicar of Oswestry.


Collects were read to the King's Shropshire Light Infantry and also the Shropshire Yeomanry and a Bugler sounded Reveille before the laying of a wreath.

Representatives of the Harold Whitfield family were in attendance together with school children from Woodside County Primary and the Marches school.

The ceremony featured on BBC Radio Shropshire and ITV news.
