Council recognises John Gareth Jones

At the Council Civic Dinner tributes were paid to Councillor John Gareth Jones who left the Council in 2017.

The Mayor in making a presentation to John Gareth said

"At the elections in May last year we witnessed the retirement of several long standing Councillors. One in particular had been a member of this Council for over 30 years.

John Gareth Jones is one of the most recognisable faces in our community. Life after Council continues to see Gareth as busy as ever helping others.

Gareth was Mayor of Oswestry on 3 separate occasions. He made many friends for Oswestry and was instrumental in taking the Town Council onto the national stage. Through his efforts and passion Oswestry secured a contract with NABMA to run many of their services and that has brought us well over £30,000 in the last decade.

John Gareth was the first President of the National Association of British Market Authorities to come from the Parish and Town Council sector and he travelled many miles promoting markets and in particular Oswestry Markets.

John Gareth is best known for his work with the elderly being a stalwart of Oswestry Senior Citizens Club.

Constantly by his side and always helping is Tegwen, his wife. We thank her for her dedication and support to this town and so many residents and visitors.

John Gareth left with us a legacy of being a professional and caring Councillor. He is a gentleman, a community champion and his role and influence in the shaping of this town and community is immense and for that we would like to say thank you".
