Conduct Talks with Minister

The Town Council on behalf of the Society of Local Council Clerks, and kindly facilitated by Owen Paterson MP, attended a meeting at the Department of Housing, Communities and Local Government at Marsham Street, London.

The meeting was with Rishi Sunak MP, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Minister for Local Government. The meeting provided an update on the representations made to the Committee on Standards in Public Life by the local council sector and the changes being sought in the review of ethical standards.

The Society was represented by Michael King, Rob Smith and Oswestry Town Clerk, David Preston and the National Association of Local Councils by Cllr Sue Baxter.

The Committee report is to be published the end of January and the message to the Minister was that the local council sector can help but look to support from government to improve conduct in local governance so that the best councillors and clerks are retained, and attracted to the sector.

The visit to the Minister concluded the campaign our Town Clerk has proudly helped to front this year with SLCC seeking a uniform code of conduct; the introduction of sanctions for poor behaviour and training and development on standards.
