How to Use the Archives
Oswestry Town Archives does not operate a reader’s ticket system. We do require researchers to register to see documents. To register you will need to provide identification that contains your name, address and signature.
Acceptable Identification:
- Current CARN reader’s ticket
- Driving licence
- Building society pass book/Post Office savings book
- UB40
- Pension book
- Family allowance book
- Medical card
- Disabled persons registration
- Official letters
- Bank statements
- DVLA documents
- Official ID cards
- Passports (NB, some passports do not contain addresses).

Restrictions on Access
Access to records under 100 years may be restricted under the Data Protection Act. Please see our Restricted Access guidelines attached.
Fragile items which would be further damaged by handling are not available for consultation until they have been repaired.
Requests for access to the Town Council’s records under the Freedom of Information Act should be made in writing to the Town Clerk.

Photocopying and Photography
A copy of our charges can be found on the attached list.
Cameras can be used to take photographs of archives subject to the condition of the document. There is no charge for this.
Any copies made or photographs taken are for personal research only and subject to Copyright.
If images of the documents are intended for publication or an exhibition, the permission of the Town Clerk is required.

The Archives Catalogue
The catalogue lists the Oswestry Borough records (1324 -1967) and the Rural Borough records (1967-1974). It also contains a small collection of local records such as photographs up to c. 2005.
You can view the catalogue online by clicking on the image below. You can scroll through the catalogue by using the left and right arrows. If you double click on the image you can increase the size of the catalogue. You can search the catalogue using key words in the search box in the top right hand corner of the image.

Modern Records and the Freedom of Information Act
The published catalogue excludes the post-1974 records of the Town Council. A hard copy catalogue of these records is available in the search room.
Requests for access to the Town Council’s records under the Freedom of Information Act should be made in writing to the Town Clerk.
