Civic Awards 2017

The Mayor Councillor Paul Milner presented two awards at the Civic Dinner to an individual and organisation that have contributed greatly to the town.

Monday 24 April 2017

The organisation award was presented to TNS FC represented by Operations Manager Matt Lee and the individual award to Alan Metcalfe.

In terms of Alan Metcalfe the Mayor said

"The individual award is always very difficult to determine with so many people doing wonderful things in the town. Tonight the award is given to a gentleman who, despite his own personal difficulties, has given some 32 years towards working with young people, and providing enjoyment through his own musical talent for many people. Porthywaen Band is widely respected in this Community fronting parades, appearing at concerts, and helping many organisations with their fund raising.

It is an organisation that encourages and brings on young people into music - either as a career or simply a hobby.

As well as the senior band at Porthywaen there is a beginners band, and a youth and training band, and for the best part of 30 years the recipient of this award has been a main stay in helping and assisting young people in each of these bands giving up many voluntary hours.

In addition, that enjoyment and support for young people is taken into Oswestry Youth Music Festival where he acts as a Steward and as Vice Chairman. He has been a strong supporter of Twinning for many years and more recently, despite his own difficulties, has provided tremendous support to his family when confronted with their own illness.

The individual award for 2017 is given to Alan Metcalfe, of Porthywaen Silver Band."

Regarding the award to TNS FC the Mayor in making the award said

"The organisation award for 2017 goes to a sporting club. It has redeveloped its facility at a cost of over £3million, has a state of the art 3G pitch and accommodates a major leisure development with extensive community use.,

The organisation has an extensive scholarship partnership with North Shropshire College. It also has a Foundation which is a charitable organisation to provide positive, sustainable, football, sports and educational activities. The trophy cabinet of this club is always full including the historic treble of Welsh Champions, Welsh Cup winners and League of Wales Cup winners."
